Basia with a book maker Esther K. Smith

Basia has been invited by a book maker Esther K. Smith to participate in her new project of making a pop-up book with kids.
Pop-up books with Esther K. Smith, 2014
Esther K Smith wrote “How to Make Books” published in November '07 by Potter Craft, an imprint of Random House. At Purgatory Pie Press http://purgatorypiepress.com/ in New York City, she makes limited editions and artist books with letterpress printer Dikko Faust and other artists and writers. They designed much of How to Make Books, hand-setting antique wood type.
Purgatory Pie Press editions are in the rare book collections of Museum of Modern Art, the Whitney Museum, The National Gallery of Art, the Corcoran, the Tate, San Francisco MoMA, and the Walker Museum. Purgatory Pie Press has had solo exhibitions at the Victoria and Albert Museum, Metropolitan Museum of Art, Harvard University and Smith College.

Hiking an Indian Head Mountain Range, Catskills

Indian Head Mountain Range, Catskills

Last Sunday we climbed Indian Head in the Catskills. It was a great day, hot but very pleasant in a shade of the trees and comfortable enough to face the real challenge.

Indian Head Mountain hike is a part of the Devil's Path. In the guides it is written that the Devil's Path is one of the most difficult and dangerous hiking paths in the world. There is a good reason why they call it the Devil's Path. The most difficult part of the path is a 30-50 foot vertical climb up a nearly shear cliff. We parked on Prediger Road and did the Devil's Path / Jimmy Dolan loop from there. Trails show signs of a lot of care with much evidence of stone work and corduroy over the many wet patches. There were a couple of blow down trees across the trails which were not always easy to bypass. We had to use small tree roots to be able to climb up. My husband and daughter made it up to the top with no complaints, and the views from the overlooks were spectacular. We detoured to Jimmy Dolan's notch by following the herd trail behind the sign and enjoyed the view from there too. Decent from there was nice and easy.

Spectacular Flora and Fauna, Catskills 2014
The flora and fauna was truly spectacular. We had a chance to see a white tailed deer from a very close distance. Fortunately we haven’t come across  with a black bear. Basia created a journal of animals and insects she saw.

Mutual Learning - Parent and Child, Part II

Mutual Learning - Parent and Child, Part II
Your kids are learning endurance and determination by what they see in you. If you wish your child to be involved in any activity set an example, read, write, play, do art and socialize. The child will learn from you and you will boost your energy seeing a positive feedback. It is a valuable experience and mutual learning for both.
Basia in Skyscraper Museum, NY, January 2014

In this part I would like to illustrate my daughter’s growth and escalation of her artistic expression. I’ve ether tried to create a situation or take an advantage of any forthcoming opportunity to give her a chance to learn and practice. She has been able to try different methods, from drawing and painting to collage and sculpture. Projects have been selected to provide inspiration for free expression and to develop specific skills.
