True Leaf Color Comes From Inside

During our last hike we all admired wide range of the autumn colors and I’ve learned from my eight-year old daughter that all these years I was wrong thinking that the true leaves color is green. 
That’s what she’s learned at the science lab:

“Trees begin to show their true colors in autumn.”
Here’s why. 
“The four primary pigments that produce color within a leaf are:
chlorophyll (green);
xanthophylls (yellow);
carotenoids (orange);
and anthocyanins (reds and purples).
During the warmer growing seasons, leaves produce chlorophyll to help plants create energy from light. The green pigment becomes dominant and covers the other pigments. 
Trees must replenish the chlorophyll because sunlight causes it to fade over time. As days get shorter and nights become longer, trees prepare for winter and the next growing season by blocking off flow to and from a leaf’s stem. This process stops green chlorophyll from being replenished and causes the leaf’s green color to fade.
The fading green allows a leaf’s true colors to emerge, producing the dazzling array of orange, yellow, red and purple pigments we refer to as fall foliage.”

Learn Good Hiking Skills

Last Sunday we were hiking with a bigger group of friends with an experienced hiker. Since Basia kept up with the leader she got a very unique opportunity to observe and ask him questions. He patiently and almost enthusiastically shared his knowledge and gradually engaged her in looking for signs and predictions for the next step. She absorbed it all like a sponge. To my surprise she has memorized lots of hiking hints.
We had remarkable hiking and family time. Check the photos and video:
Since navigation skills are extremely important for hikers and backpackers we are going to study them thoroughly at home. Check how to navigatewith map and compass.
Hiking Hints:

  • Hike in a group before you learn enough to be independent.  
  • Leave your hike plan with someone back home.
  • Take a photo ID, insurance card, and credit card on the trail.
  • Have a good map and read it scrupulously.
  • Dress in layers; wear comfy clothing and shoes.
  • Use sunscreen and a hat to prevent sunburn, even on cloudy or cold days.
  • Pack lightly.
  • Always carry first aid kit, water, snacks, sunscreen, hat, flashlight, supplies to start a fire, jackknife, and string.
  • Replace consumed items after each hike.
  • Keep your pack organized and put items back where you expect to find them.
  • Keep yourself and your gear dry. Put items in zip-loc baggies, sleeping bag in heavy-duty plastic garbage bag, clothes in waterproof bags.
  • Drink often to stay hydrated.
  • Snack often to keep your energy level up rather than waiting for a big lunch meal.
  • Follow the leader but always stay alert.
  • Let the slower person set the pace.
  • Keep pace. Learn the basic pacing, resting, and rhythm skills for an enjoyable hike. Tortoise rather than hare.
  • It helps to focus on positive thoughts, rather than how exhausted you feel. Repeat a mantra or positive expression to yourself over and over.
  • To decrease the gradient on very steep ascents, consider zigzagging rather than going straight up.
  • Try to keep your breaks short and regular rather than long and occasional. This allows less time for the muscles to stiffen up, thus making it easier to get going again.
  • Regularly make small adjustments to your pack’s harness, hip belt, shoulder and stabilizer straps. 
  • If your hands swell while hiking, raise them. Hold onto your pack shoulder strap for a while and see how that helps.
  • You can hold onto long sticks to support your steps.
  • Follow – “Leave No Trace” ethics.
  • Don't create cairns, tree blazes, or any other sign to mark the trail. Pay special attention to the impact you have on the environment. You may be surprised how a little care can make a big difference for many years to come. Learn how to minimize the effects of your passing through the land.

What are Habits of Mind? 
The attributes that human beings display when they behave intelligently.

The Habits of Mind incorporate the following dimensions:
  • Value: Choosing to employ a pattern of intellectual behaviors rather than other, less productive patterns.
  • Inclination: Feeling the tendency to employ a pattern of intellectual behaviors.
  • Sensitivity: Perceiving opportunities for, and appropriateness of, employing the pattern of behaviors.
  • Capability: Possessing the basic skills and capacities to carry through with the behaviors.
  • Commitment: Constantly striving to reflect on and improve performance of the pattern of intellectual behaviors.
  • Policy: Making it a policy to promote and incorporate the patterns of intellectual behaviors into actions, decisions, and resolutions of problematic situations.

The 16 Habits of Mind just described were drawn from research on human effectiveness, descriptions of remarkable performers, and analyses of the characteristics of efficacious people. These Habits of Mind can serve as mental disciplines. Students, parents, and teachers, when confronted with problematic situations, might habitually use one or more of these Habits of Mind by asking themselves these questions:
  1. What is the most intelligent thing I can do right now?
  2. How can I learn from this? What are my resources? How can I draw on my past successes with problems like this? What do I already know about the problem? What resources do I have available or need to generate?
  3. How can I approach this problem flexibly? How might I look at the situation in another way? How can I draw upon my repertoire of problem-solving strategies? How can I look at this problem from a fresh perspective (lateral thinking)?
  4. How can I illuminate this problem to make it clearer, more precise? Do I need to check out my data sources? How might I break this problem down into its component parts and develop a strategy for understanding and accomplishing each step?
  5. What do I know or not know? What questions do I need to ask? What strategies are in my mind now? What am I aware of in terms of my own beliefs, values, and goals with this problem? What feelings or emotions am I aware of that might be blocking or enhancing my progress?
  6. How does this problem affect others? How can we solve it together? What can I learn from others that would help me become a better problem solver?

These Habits of Mind transcend all subject matters commonly taught in school. They are characteristic of peak performers in all places: homes, schools, athletic fields, organizations, the military, governments, churches, or corporations.The goal of education, therefore, should be to support others and ourselves in liberating, developing, and habituating these Habits of Mind more fully. Taken together, they are a force directing us toward increasingly authentic, congruent, and ethical behavior. They are the touchstones of integrity and the tools of disciplined choice making. They are the primary vehicles in the lifelong journey toward integration. They are the "right stuff" that make human beings efficacious.

Slime Mold - Primeval or Sophisticated?

Yesterday we watched “THE CREEPING GARDEN” by Tim Grabham and Jasper Sharp, newly released documentary about slime mold. You could think - little appalling subject but it was presented in a very artistic and scientific way that interested not only grown-ups but also kids.
Today we were creeping in local garden to find one. No luck so fur but we are on a mission now.
