The Language of Sculpture, Kalisz, Poland 2014

Parent involvement during the summer months is crucial to student success. According to the National Education Association, “Parents who are actively involved in their children’s learning at home help their children become more successful learners in and out of school.”1*
Summer vacation gives endless opportunities to explore the world and learn innovative things.
This summer 7 years old Basia has learned a lot about sculpture.
What kind of sculpture is relief?
A relief is a type of sculpture where the form is modeled out from a flat background. It is three-dimensional (3-D).
She looked into a history of relief sculpture while visiting UAM, The Faculty of Pedagogy and Fine Arts in Kalisz, part of The Adam Mickiewicz University of Poznan, Poland
http://wpa.amu.edu.pl/strona-glowna/wp-a/aktualnosci and learned that there are three basic types of relief sculpture:

  • 1.      Bas-relief  (low-relief) where the sculpture projects only slightly from the background surface.
  • 2.  Alto-relievo (high-relief) where the sculpture projects at least half or more of its natural circumference from the background, and may in parts be wholly disengaged from the ground.
  • 3.   Sunken relief (incised, coelanaglyphic or intaglio relief) where the carving is sunk below the level of the surrounding surface and is contained within a sharply incised contour line that frames it with a powerful line of shadow. The surrounding surface remains untouched, with no projections. Sunken relief carving is found almost exclusively in ancient Egyptian Art.
Finally Basia has participated in a workshop
