Safe, Busy and Happy Child

After Hurricane Sandy, for five long days and dark nights, trapped on the 16th floor, in a Manhattan apartment, without power, heating or water but with a full of energy, five year old girl. We had plenty time, an old, kerosene lamp, known in Britain as a paraffin lamp, flash lights and a battery operated radio with a CD player.
Except of healthy walking up and down the stairs, caring water each time to fill up our water supplies we were checking flooded areas in the South Street Seaport, learning and expressing compassion, observing consequences and looking for the solutions for the future.
We had a chance to complete many educational and engaging activities.

1. Learn to understand feeling and emotions.

2. Listen to a story about a kerosene lamp invented in 1853 by a Polish pharmacist and petroleum industry pioneer Ignacy Lukasiewicz. To learn more go to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ignacy_%C5%81ukasiewicz

  • Retell a story.
6. Play with fridge magnets.

7.  Learn to count from 0 to 100 and practice writing the numbers.

10. Do a phonic book to see patterns in words to unlock the code that letters carry. “My Phonics Word Book” http://www.abebooks.com/products/isbn/9781562938253 and “My Phonics Word Book II” http://www.abebooks.com/products/isbn/9781562938123 by McClanahan Book Co., Inc.
  • Read phonogram.
  • Match phonogram with a sticker.
  • Read words with the same phonogram.
  • Write a phonogram with words on a separate piece of paper to practice.
11. Play a “Beginning Sound” activity by Smethport  to practice phonemic awareness skill. A child learns to identify initial word sounds and be able to distinguish between them. http://edushop.edu4kids.com/beginning-sounds-pocket-chart-p-6121.html
